Countries with the highest animal consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis. It's suspected this is due to acid load causing depletion of calcium from bones as their urine is higher in calcium. But those countries are also the tallest (Scandinavia) and it's known that taller people are more susceptible to osteoporosis and hip fracture etc. And the high urine calcium is because meat eaters consume more calcium. Some studies show vegetarians/vegans live longer, while others show it's inconclusive.

Ignoring the abuse aspect of it, I think we could all benefit from incorporating more plant based protein in our diets. The jury's still out on soy but chickpeas, walnuts, hemp seeds etc. are great sources of both protein and dietary fibre

People also like the taste of meat though so I can't see it disappearing entirely
